How Employers Calculate Salary Tax in Pakistan
Employees often see a tax line on the payslip without being shown the full logic behind it. This guide explains the payroll method employers usually follow when calculating salary tax in Pakistan and why the monthly deduction may change during the year.
Payroll Method in One Line
Employers usually project annual taxable salary, apply the relevant annual salary slabs, and then spread the expected annual tax across monthly salary payments.
Step 1: Project Annual Salary
Payroll starts with expected monthly salary and turns it into yearly salary. It may also add known taxable bonus, arrears, or other expected salary components so the annual figure reflects the employee’s real projected income.
This is the step many employees miss when they compare only one payslip against one month’s base salary.
Step 2: Adjust for Recognized Deductions
If payroll recognizes deductions such as provident fund or other eligible adjustments, those items may affect the taxable salary picture. Not every payroll deduction changes taxable salary, so this step has to be handled carefully.
That is why employees should avoid assuming every line on the salary slip is part of the tax calculation itself.
Step 3: Apply Annual Salary Slabs
Once payroll has projected taxable annual income, it applies the annual salary slab logic. This is where the actual income-tax estimate is produced. The salary tax line is not normally built by guessing a monthly percentage first.
This annual-first method is the main reason monthly and annual salary tax should never be confused.
Step 4: Spread the Tax Across Payroll Months
After annual tax is estimated, payroll usually divides it across monthly salary runs. If the annual picture changes because of increment, arrears, or bonus, payroll may revise the remaining monthly deductions.
That is why salary tax can look stable for months and then suddenly change.
